Overview
The STM Validation project was a major European initiative designed to bring wide-scale digitalization to maritime transport. It focused on creating a secure, interoperable framework for real-time information exchange (such as maritime routes, port operations, and voyage plans) among shipping companies, shore centers, and ports.
Extended Context
During its validation phase, the project deployed test beds in Northern Europe and the Mediterranean Sea. To prove the concept of standardized information exchange, new equipment was installed on 300 ship bridges, across 13 European ports, and at 5 shore centers. The ultimate goal was to overcome industry communication silos, increasing predictability, sustainability, and safety across the maritime sector.
